| Daffy was my first baby quaker from my pair. He had a rough start in life and I wasn't sure how he was going to turn out, so I kept him for myself. His parents bit off the tips of his toes, and for a while, I wasn't sure if he would ever walk. He flew long before he could walk on a flat surface. I'm very surprised he didn't turn out splay legged because he couldn't get much traction to keep his legs in line. I made sure he had plenty of bedding and lots of rope and cement perches to help him grip and he turned out great. By the time he was 6 months old, he was playing just like any other quaker.
He was hatched on December 9th, 2003 and is a very cuddly little guy. He was a very needy baby, constantly wanting attention or to be on me. I let his flight feathers grow out when he was about a year old, and that helped him become more independent. Unfortunately, he appointed himself overseer of all the babies, and I had to clip him again to keep the babies safe from his beak. He loves to sit on my shoulder while I clean the bird dishes every evening, and try to steal food from my plate at meal times. He loves toys with little pieces he can manipulate in his beak. Overall he is a very well behaved little bird, but like many quakers he needs to be watched around other birds. He has an especially strong dislike for baby parrotlets and will bite their toes if one lands on his cage. |
